Gizztober 11th: Murder of the Universe (2017) |

Favorite track: Han-Tyumi, The Confused Cyborg
I'm sure this isn't an uncommon stance, but the first two acts of this album just really don't land for me. I very rarely listen to anything before Welcome to an Altered Future. That said, I love the whole third act a lot. It's a really fun story already, but the music is great too. I don't actually have all that much else to say about it to be honest. |
Gizztober 10th: Flying Microtonal Banana (2017) |

Favorite track: Nuclear Fusion
If I recall correctly, it was either Rattlesnake or a song from a future album that I heard as my absolute first Gizz song. Every single time I hear that song, I think of... I think a youtube comment? That went "This song is just gucci gang for people who like LSD instead of xanax," which seems pretty accurate haha. This is the first song of their first five-albums-in-one-year sweep (because yes, there's more than one). I personally consider this album the beginning of the King Gizzard renaissance -- my assumption is that this is when their audience really started to grow. I'm not super music theory savvy, so the concept of 'microtonals' was new to me when I first picked up this album, and while I still can't really pick up on it, I will admit that the sound it produces is really cool. |
Gizztober 9th: Nonagon Infinity (2016) |

Favorite track: Evil Death Roll
This is the album that started it all for me! I don't listen to it as often as others, but I do have a soft spot for it for that reason. I actually saw King Gizzard live before I became an active listener, and probably a year later, I decided to pick up one of their albums and listened to it start to finish. It, of course, had to be the one that loops seamlessly, so I found myself listening to it a lot. Personally, I think it's the perfect introductory album to their discography. The only miss on this album for me is Invisible Face, but otherwise all of the songs rule, and I think they're fairly approachable. My favorite track on this album changes constantly, but right now it's Evil Death Roll. |
Gizztober 8th: Paper Mâché Dream Balloon (2015) |

Favorite track: Dirt
Paper Mâché Dream Balloon is a really comfy album to me. I'll admit that I often have a soft spot for acoustic albums just due to the fact that I like playing guitar/ukulele and it's often hard to follow along with non-acoustic songs with what I have at my disposal. Compared to other albums preceding it, it's a lot softer?, in a way that King Gizzard takes into some of their later work. |
Gizztober 7th: Quarters (2015) |

Favorite track: The River
I am not gonna lie to y'all. I was not looking forward to today. Like I said during my Float Along - Fill Your Lungs review, I do not have the patience for lengthier songs, and that is... literally the point of Quarters. Four songs, all 10 minutes and 10 seconds long. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a super cool concept. Each song feels like a canvas, and they put a lot of thought and care into filling out each one. The River is classic Gizz. Even though I don't care for the other three tracks as much, I have always appreciated that KGATLW is a very experimental group. They're willing to follow every 'what if' question to its natural conclusion and they're never the type of band to shy away from a challenge. |
Gizztober 6th: I'm In Your Mind Fuzz (2014) |
---|
10/07/2023 (late) |
Favorite track: Slow Jam 1
Probably in my top three favorite albums to be honest. It's the first of their discography that I really regularly listen to the whole album from front to back, though I'm partial to side B. I have this distinct memory of laying in the grass, sun beating down on me, while in between spring semester finals and listening to Her and I (Slow Jam 2), which had a feeling of peace that is difficult to replicate. I think the general theme of this album, or at least side A, is mind control/brainwashing, which I think is a fun topic to explore. Side note: I'm having some difficulty trying to keep up the vaguely formal tone of the first few of these, so I'm going to drop the facade and be a little more casual going forward. |
Gizztober 5th: Oddments (2014) |
---|
10/07/2023 |
Favorite track: These next few are going to be brief because I got really wrapped up in an ARG recently. I really enjoy Oddments. It's not always my go-to for listening, because I'm a very 'set and forget' sort of listener and I feel like that works best for albums with a cohesive theme, but there are SO many good tracks on this album. Work This Time has (I think?) the highest number of listens on Spotify, because it was one of the top tracks for Spotify's modern psychedelic playlist for a while, and for good reason! Other stand-out tracks, to me, are: Alluda Majaka (killer opener), Sleepwalker, Hot Wax, It's Got Old, and yes, even Vegemite. |
Gizztober 4th: Float Along - Fill Your Lungs (2013) |
---|
10/04/2023 |
Favorite track: Let Me Mend The Past
Float Along - Fill Your Lungs is probably the first of their albums that could truly be described as 'psychedelic', but it's also one album in their discography that I haven't really been able to get into, unfortunately. It's the first to have one of their lengthier songs (Head On/Pill), which I really lack the patience for most of the time. Let Me Mend The Past is in my regular rotation, but I did find that I really enjoyed Pop In My Step during this listen as well. I'm sure the album can be really appealing to the right audience, but it's just really not my thing. :( |
Gizztober 3rd: Eyes Like The Sky (2013) |
---|
10/03/2023 |
Favorite track: Dust In The Wind
This one is insanely cool; I'd never heard anything like it before getting into this band. A sharp departure from their last two albums, Eyes Like The Sky somehow succeeds at being both an album and an audio book. It has a compelling narrative, and for that reason, a sense of cohesion, that the previous two lack. The late Broderick Smith's voice and the instrumentation come together to paint an extremely vivid picture that makes me feel as if I'm watching a movie rather than listening to an album. The downside to having a cohesive and compelling narrative is that it is almost impossible to listen to a song from it out of context and get the same amount of satisfaction from it. That said, whenever I am in the mood to listen to this album from start to finish, it is one of their more satisfying albums to listen to. |
Gizztober 2nd: 12 Bar Bruise (2012) |
---|
10/02/2023 |
Favorite track: Bloody Ripper
I really like this album. Not many of these tracks are in my regular rotation, though I may revisit some of them after this listen. This is the first album that we get a see some of their more narrative lyrics, which was one of the things that drew me to the band in the first place. It plants the seeds of what will soon become Eyes Like The Sky (Sam Cherry's Last Shot), and showcases Ambrose's vocals for the first time (Cut Throat Boogie). Overall, 12 Bar Bruise is a pleasantly punchy album with a handful of gems. |
Gizztober 1st: Willoughby's Beach (2011) |
---|
10/01/2023 |
Favorite track: Dead-Beat
The first full album in King Gizzard's discography! It really embodies their garage and surf rock roots. The building blocks for what King Gizzard will eventually become is there, albeit with a little less lyrical substance, e.g. "Jack it, green out". For that reason, although I really love the instrumentation, I have a hard time engaging with the album beyond that. Knowing their later work, Willoughby's Beach feels charmingly sophomoric, and as someone who is very new to writing/producing music, I feel inspired to keep going. |
